It’s almost Labor Day – are you working?

August 28, 2008

The new school year is within sight.  I'm already planning my units and thinking about how I will setup my room.  Are you working?  Did you find something?  I hope so.  This is a highly competitive job market and you should realize that it's okay if you had to settle for something less than your dream job.  I like my job, but it's certainly not JFL (Job For Life) material.  You need to get experience.  You need to make contacts.

I check the job sites everyday.  I usually find something.  Keep your eyes and ears open.  Strange things happen during the school year.  Certainly, you will see lots of long-term substitute positions opening up.  I posted a few today and I am sure I will post many more in the coming months.  Occasionally, probationary positions open up during the school year, strange as it seems.  Do not waste any opportunities.  If you're offered a job, take it and get some experience, even if you know that the work environment or district will not meet your lofty expectations.  Do good work everyday and good things will happen.

I need to get back to unit planning and ordering materials!  Good luck on the job hunt.

You’re right about jobs opening at strange times. I have been teaching for 8 years now–my first probationary position started on September 30th.
